Mediocrity

I guess I never really knew how much it would sting to be called mediocre. I guess because it’s such a simple word, its meaning seems harmless. It’s like the limbo space between bad and good. It’s interesting that we would use this word to be an insult because we use it to describe quality. As if  to say, “from my position here, you are less than some standard.” Some standard that you are above me in? the lesser has no right to comment on the quality of the greater, so am I to believe that you are somehow more than me? That you’re worth more, that you matter more? No person has the right to judge the quality of another’s life.

ps. I wasn’t really all that sorry for telling you that you thought highly of yourself.
